Socio-economic trajectories, urban area expansion and ecosystem conservation affect global potential supply of bioenergy

چکیده

Biomass energy is projected to be a critical resource for defossilization of the system. While urban area extension and land conservation would constrain potential biomass supply, there little understanding their impacts. This paper presents global regional bioenergy supply estimates by newly implementing expansion in an integrated assessment model AIM (Asia-Pacific Integrated Model). Scenarios were investigated as combinations shared socio-economic pathways (SSPs) with default expanded conservation. The potentials 2050 fixed at base year level range 228 (SSP3) 292 (SSP1) exajoules per (EJ yr-1), corresponding differences fraction available crop production. under closely tracked trends reference SSP cases, but decreases ranging from 4.48 6.95 (SSP5) EJ yr-1. total effects small, regions experienced mixed results some cases reversal trends. Under scenarios, reductions caused observed lower except scenarios. These enhance patterns while same time revealing how may fail capture region-specific study concluded that: 1) urbanization lack relevance scale becomes important regions, 2) loss can curbed encouraging compact SSP1 (Sustainable Development), zoning, pursuing joint energy-conservation policies.

Socio-economic and ecological impacts of global protected area expansion plans.

Several global strategies for protected area (PA) expansion have been proposed to achieve the Convention on Biological Diversity's Aichi target 11 as a means to stem biodiversity loss, as required by the Aichi target 12. However, habitat loss outside PAs will continue to affect habitats and species, and PAs may displace human activities into areas that might be even more important for species p...

Book Review: Socio-Economic Impacts of Bioenergy Production

During the last few decades, the bioenergy production has been radically promoted worldwide (EIA, 2013) as a clean and eco-friendly source of energy mainly due to the global concern of climate change, primarily attributed by the increasing emission of CO2 by fossil fuel consumptions. Although vegetable oils was first used as liquid fuels (bioenergy) in internal combustion engine by Rudolf Diese...

Trade-offs between conservation and socio-economic objectives in managing a tropical marine ecosystem

Article history: Received 10 April 2007 Received in revised form 9 September 2007 Accepted 11 September 2007 Understanding the trade-off relationships between ecological, economic and social objectives is important in designing policies to manage or restore ecosystems. Using the northern South China Sea (NSCS) as a case study, we explore the trade-offs between conservation and socio-economic ob...

Global Educational Expansion and Socio-Economic Development: An Assessment of Findings from the Social Sciences

— Among development agencies, conventional wisdom holds that educational expansion improves economic welfare and health, reduces inequalities, and encourages democratic political systems. We investigate the empirical foundations for these expectations in recent social science research. Consistent evidence indicates that health and demographic benefits result from educational expansion, and sugg...

Futures of global urban expansion: uncertainties and implications for biodiversity conservation

Urbanization will place significant pressures on biodiversity across the world. However, there are large uncertainties in the amount and location of future urbanization, particularly urban land expansion. Here, we present a global analysis of urban extent circa 2000 and probabilistic forecasts of urban expansion for 2030 near protected areas and in biodiversity hotspots. We estimate that the am...
